If your going to base you show on different locations globally, portraying the country correctly is of importance otherwise it comes across as ignorance.
Episode 4 negatively portrayed Saudi Arabia as it stereotypes the country. Though the protest feels real because it takes inspiration from real movement previously seen in the events of “Mahsa Amini’s death in Iran and the long battle for women’s freedom”. Portraying Saudi as one of the first to condemn women even though in reality
it’s one of the world leading countries in protecting women.
Even the town name of where they are located in isn’t accurate. As stated they are in a city called “Sulaymaniyah” which is located in Iraq! So the put an Iran tragedy inside a city in Iraq and placed it in Riyadh Saudi Arabia. Continuing the misrepresentation. Location, accents, appearances and even names have no relation to Saudi.
Though the movement and concept of the show is interesting and something that speaks to me as a women I cannot continue as the misrepresentation of multiple locations is disappointing and a turn off.
Constructively I would like to recommend for future projects, to research locations, countries and stories. As to avoid negative portrayals of locations that further the continued stereotypes that floods the media already.
