I’m going to say just a couple things about this movie… it is not the great and beautiful movie the 5 star reviews have made it out to be. It’s animation and art style cannot compare to the beautiful Encanto or even 2014’s Big Hero 6. The story telling also was lacking and overall seemed like a movie only Netflix would have the courage to pick up- but that’s not to say Netflix doesn’t produce good movies because even Over the Moon was better than this film. I also think the target audience was too specific, and the jokes and friend group made it even more narrow. Also wth was that nightmare and her getting turned on by her own drawings 😭🧍🏻♀️ I know a lot of people praise this movie for being directed by a woman but uh… this probably isn’t the best example of well directed movie. And she keeps exclaiming shes an adult but she’s only 13? Why are you forcing sexuality on kids so early now? 2 minutes of my life were really wasted on a scene of a red panda twerking her moms face, and my cousins (11 and 6) and my sister (11) arguably the target audience didn’t laugh at all during the film so the jokes were a miss too. Just a below average movie but the boy band did remind me of boys who cry from SpongeBob so that was the highlight of the movie for me. I hope Pixar doesn’t continue with this style of animation, it’s disappointing this movie was such a miss and believe it or not dismissing the lower star reviews as being “Karen’s” doesn’t make our opinions invalid just like how it doesn’t make your 5 star reviews invalid.
I do want to warn parents this isn’t for school age children, this is more middle school age based and it also just isn’t the best movie on Disney +.
I hope more beautiful and well written coming of age stories like Encanto come to Disney. Relatable characters like Mirabel and Hiro from Big Hero 6 should be explored.
I got strong furry and band kid vibes from Mei and unfortunately her being “quirky 🤪” just didn’t work out.
