David Lynch's adaptation of Dune was one of the worst movies ever made. I'm not sure anybody would've done any better, but at least they would be smart enough not to try. Frank Herbert's book was excellent but totally unsuited to be turned into a movie. If somebody wanted to spend the money to make it into a Game of Thrones multi-season series they might have a chance, but there is too much of a story there to be packed into a movie or two or three. It wouldn't be cheap but at least with modern CGI it would look a lot better than the 1980s not-so-special effects.
