I agree that the skeleton plot is a cliche: grumpy senior becomes lovely! Even to the cat. But it blends humour into a narrative which could be overwhelmingly sad. The timing of the scenes is excellent and the flashbacks are skilfully woven in. It is heartwarming without being sentimental. All the acting is first rate, the characters becoming entirely credible and likeable.
