I actually was in this film...( bearded cop in the car accident scene) That aside the movie didn't really rock my world when it first came out in 2005. Watching it again in 2021 with a softer heart and having experienced more loss in my life I found it quite moving.
The movie has a few light moments and although it has a "happy ending" per se, overall it has a melancholy feeling led by Johnathon Schaech's deep sorrow and the parallel sadness of Kathleen Rose Perkins' character as she comes to understand the losses in the life of her boyfriend. I guess it's a melodrama but pretty well done.
Performances are excellent and nice scenery courtesy of rural Nova Scotia. It won't leave you feeling energized or "happy" but it does reinforce the idea of second chances despite the most debilitating tragedies life can offer.
