A lot of money has been spent on this show to firstly gain the rights to Diana Gabaldon's fantastic Outlander series of books, but then secondly to accurately render those stories on the screen by way of excellent cinematography, acting and costumeing, and it is evident that it was money well spent. Watching the series drew me in to listening to the books, which is a wonderful experience in itself, because the narrator Davina Porter is so good at portraying individual characters within the story line. Watch this series for the great storytelling, and allow it to draw you in to reading or listening to the books for even more great storytelling and backstory explanation.

For anyone who likes their history delivered with clear-eyed critique, paired with a healthy dose of sarcastic humor, you have found it in this book. And through it all, Simon Winder does it from the perspective of a man who truly loves and is intrigued by the country he profiles. I credit Germania for a giving me a much more realistic, and much less romanticized, view of the place my ancestors decided to leave.
