I rarely read other reviews because I often find that my experience with a movie vastly differs from the "critics". I was shocked to see that this movie didn't get 5 star reviews from everyone, including the critics quoted on Wikipedia. My son is a Catholic priest, and he encouraged me to watch this movie. I certainly was not anyone like the father that Mel Gibson portrayed in the movie. I have basically led a decent life, I am not an alcoholic, and I think that I have been a good father to my children. But I have struggles with my Catholic faith, and this movie helped me in my journey. It was beautifully done, well acted, and moving in so many ways. I particularly liked how well the movie was able, in 2 short hours, to reconstruct the life of Father Stu from the depth of his despair to his ordination and finally to his death. It's so sad that someone like Father Stu was called away from his priestly duties so soon, but as mentioned in the movie, things happen for a reason. The fact that a movie was made about Father Stu demonstrates that his duties in this world carry on even though he is no longer with us. This is among the top ten movies I have seen. Maybe I missed something, but I now wish I had known in advance that this was based on a true story. I like movies that are based on a believable plot, and during the movie I kept thinking that this was almost too ridiculous to pass as anything that could be remotely believable. So I was amazed when I found out that it was based on true life events. I wish that had been mentioned at the beginning of the movie. Other than that, it was a beautiful movie, and one that I will recommend to others. Thank you, Mark Wahlburg, for making and starring in this movie. Your efforts will surely affect many people's lives.
