Amazing game if you understand how both action games and rhythm games work. A blast from start to finish, with me clearing some post game content to satisfy my thirst for more. DLC/sequel, pretty please.
Tips for people that lack action game experience:
- IMPORTANT: always knock up and combo enemies in the air whenever possible - you not only rack up more points, but also dopamine, style, enjoyment, and most importantly MOST enemies' attack can not reach you. You only have to watch out for the 10% of attack that can reach you.
- Be perceptive to enemy attack audio + visual cues, always anticipate and be ready to dodge/parry/jump on the next beat after the cue.
- Try to change up your combo routes, you only have to alternate between two if you want to avoid penalty. But do try branching out different attack for their attack properties for different situations when you start to feel comfortable, you will ultimately have more fun and be less repetitive this way.
- Hit the training room to try out new combo routes / unfamiliar mechanic. Might sound like a waste of time to you, but I promise that not only you will get 10x better faster doing cool things without enemy pressure, you will also ultimately get to understand how other people make those action game combo montage and you will end up enjoying and appreciating action games much, much more.
Tips for people that lack rhythm game experience:
- IMPORTANT: GET. IN. RHYTHM. Listen closely to the music, don't think, don't pay too much attention to your character's animations or the beat visual cues, just feel the beat. One way to help with this is to bop your head, tap your feet, hum along, sway your body. Might sound/look stupid to people around you, but hey you really shouldn't care about what other people think.
- One way to practice getting into the beat is to "dodge -> dodge -> dodge -> light attack -> repeat" for each beat. Do this while traversing the level or during the start of battle to get into the beat in your head.
- Enemies only attack on the beat, so once you feel the beat you will never get damaged so long as you keep parrying/dodging/jumping on the beat.
- Everything you do is synced to the beat, like the end of attack animation, jumping, hooking, so on. Get familiar with the timing and chain together your moves on the beat.
Pros:
-Dopamine rush
-Great OST
-Audio cues and feedback on point
-Great 3D/2D blended, cell-shaded animation
-Runs great, rarely stutters. Amazing achievement in this era of broken AAA games.
-Story and dialogue that does not take itself too seriously
-Forgiving but fair scoring system
-Near infinite Jam combo routes is easy and satisfying to land
Cons:
-Please let me skip the unskippable dialogue/cutscences on second playthrough
-Elite enemies' "Showdown attack" triggers can be somewhat buggy / weird
-It doesn't even matter if you fill up some of the elite enemies' stun gauge, they recover instantly anyways. I know you have to keep them in the air so that they wont recover, but sometimes it just doesn't work.
-Needs more air combo routes.
-Sometimes dodge/parry counter doesn't work, even after switching partner after using one.
-For the love of god, if you are gonna game over me on the hardest difficulty just for a few seconds of inactivity at the start (you game over when you hit rank D but you start at rank C on the hardest difficulty, which unlocks after clearing the game once), at least give me a taunt button.
TLDR; must play if you like both rhythm or action games, or if you like one of those genre and want to understand and get into the other genre.
