For it’s time “The Great Race” was great entertainment ! And I will say that compared to other movies of its genre it still holds up today. It’s well shot with a host of amazing actors, notably Jack Lemmon who is very believable as the quirky and power hungry Professor Fate who will do anything to win the race. He plays a double role and does so with aplomb - such a versatile actor!
This is a slapstick comedy and inspired a cartoon called “ Wacky Races” - I remember watching this with great amusement as a child back in the day.
I’ve always loved Natalie Wood, and in this movie she looks beautiful, although her acting skills for sure are not challenged. All the actors in this film ( inc Tony Curtis and Peter Falk) must have had great fun working together - with the exception of Jack Lemmon - not much was required of them ( except to look good ).
But the movie does capture your attention -and there are some iconic moments like the pie fight which used 4 thousand pies to shoot it!
All in all if you want some light fun and some laughs “ The Great Race” is worth watching.
