The show has all the makings of something that could have rivaled and even bested The Walking Dead (TWD). It felt like TWD meets 28 Days later.
However, almost immediately in the first episode, it started to feel like the acting was forced, the military scene felt like nobody on the writing team even had an inkling of how things run in the military.
Then as it continues, you realize the stories become short stories strung together. It felt like “Les Misérables” and I thought they were all going to meet and their storylines were going to form a larger storyline… except it didn’t.
None of the characters have backgrounds and you don’t see any development. When you start to find a reason to give a damn about a character, they die. It’s not a bad thing, just look at Game of Thrones (GoT), but their death isn’t used to further the storyline and in fact, it’s a meaningless death that people say is “realistic & gritty”.
I’m glad that they’re not all randomly picking up a gun and suddenly scoring 100% accuracy headshots, so that’s something to be thankful for, I guess, but the zombies themselves don’t seem to have any uniformity — some freeze in the cold, some seem to operate fine in the cold, some can break down doors, others can’t break glass, others can.
It feels like this movie was submitted by high school students to their film professor for a grade and the professor gave them barely passing grade and told them to redo it because it was riddled with plot holes, no continuity amongst the story, and finally — no pay off.
I watch a TV series so I can be entertained. I thought that if I gave it until Season 3, it would get better with a bigger budget and become a better show — sucking me in with characters that grow on you.
Instead, I wasted days of my life watching a show that was anticlimactic, needlessly gritty, & not at all entertaining.
For the record, the person who suggested this show was my teen kiddo. Perhaps this is what this genre is geared towards — the gullible and impressionable. Where “gore” and “gritty” replace storytelling and entertaining.
The only thing this show motivated me to do was right a review and downvote it on Netflix to help others avoid it.
