The opening scenes confused me. Both characters were obviously black and I thought very early on in the film that Irene was going to get herself lynched flittering in and out of white establishments.
Both actresses are talented and gorgeous but to expect the audience to pretend they looked white was a big ask. Claire looked creepy, sitting across the hotel staring at Irene. I thought she was a ghost.
The casting was lazy and sloppy. I don't know if the actresses actually think they can pass. I don't understand the reasoning and I wasn't in the mood for make believe and I couldn't suspend disbelief. The whites in those days were veritable rabid blood hounds when it came to detecting black blood.
Passing was a dangerous gamble and yet I didn't feel this sense of danger as both Irene and Clare swan around in what must have been an alternate 1920's where the whites had really bad eyesight.
Very disappointing.
