I feared Selena wouldn’t make music again but “I Said I Love You First” is a return to form. Selena sounds completely comfortable and at ease, no doubt a side effect of working with her fiancé and other trusted collaborators. Stand outs like”Don’t take it personally,” “How Does it Feel To Be Forgotten” and “You Said You Were Sorry” highlight Selena’s gift as a storyteller. “Bluest Flame” is hyperpop goodness that highlights Benny’s production style. It’ll have you moving for sure. “Ojos triste” featuring The Marias is one of the most striking songs on the album; love when Selena infuses Spanish into her music. “sunset Boulevard” sounds right at home in its position in the track list. “Cowboy” is fun and playful but also finds Gomez embracing her sensuality. She isn’t afraid to remind her audience that she’s a grown woman. “Younger and hotter than me” is a beautifully somber song that once again highlights the storytelling Gomez defaults to. “Call Me When You Breakup” is a highlight of the album but it’s short length makes you feel like the song is over just as it really gets going. “Don’t Wanna Cry” has the superstar duo wiping away the tears and basically luring listeners to the dance floor. Overall a solid effort from Selena and Benny. Now, let’s hope we don’t have to wait ANOTHER five years for a full-length LP.
