Honestly do think this film doesn’t deserve the praise it has. I feel its meta-humor is self-defeating as it constantly proceeds to do said cliche. The film’s pacing also feels break neck and I feel that there was honestly no effort into non-CGI affects. There’s a scene with a puppet that’s obviously CGI and whilst I would say it looks good, I still think it looks a bit uncanny.
I also think the voice acting is lazy and bad. John Mulaney as Chip and Andy Samberg as Dale sound absolutely emotionless. KiKi Layne honestly gives an obnoxious performance, it feels like she’s some sort of insane yandere fan girl. Will Arnett as Sweet Pete is an alright performance, he does well enough (I’ll get into this whole can of worms later). Eric Bana is also, alright I guess, so is Flula Borg. Dennis Haysbert‘s barely in the film so I won’t really review his performance. In a twist of fate, Keegan-Michael Key is actually relatively good as the Cheesemonger, but I can definitely tell the accent is fake. Tress MacNeille Also gives a good performance since, you know, she’s Gadget’s original voice actor. Tim Robinson is alright, that’s all I’m gonna say. Seth Rogen‘s character is Seth Rogen. And I’m sorry to say but J. K. Simmons is just destroyed by the script, he has a good voice but the script is honestly awful. As well, the pop culture references feel extremely rushed and lazy, it’s just “Look! It’s movie Sonic ugly! Please laugh”, honestly quite embarrassing.
And the whole controversy with Sweet Pete. Peter Pan’s original voice actor Bobby Driscoll was dropped by Hollywood since he was getting older, and in 1968 he was found dead by some boys from Atherosclerosis. Sweet Pete literally paraphrases Driscoll at one point, I can’t remember the exact quote but it was something along the lines of “I grew up and Disney dropped me”. This is honestly somewhat disgusting, it’s like if I shot a man and made a book 70 years later about how much that man sucked. This film deserves its controversy.
In conclusion, I really wanted to give Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers a good review but, I just can’t. The controversy, bad acting, bad story bad everything. This is a bad movie, and I really genuinely don’t recommend it.
