I had high expectations for this film, but…erghhhh. Did not enjoy, whatsoever. Could not get past the sexualisation of someone with a baby’s brain. Just felt off. Not very funny and the performances are overrated, in my opinion. Emma Stone, who I usually adore, is hard to watch as a ‘retard’ (that is how she is referred to in the film); I also don’t think it takes a virtuoso performance to play someone mentally handicapped — where is the nuance in her performance? Not many redeeming features, although it does look nice; the photography is lovely and some of the scenery is stunning. But all in all, I guess I just missed the ‘brilliance’ that so many others have seen in this film. A long, awkward mess.
