A pacing problem that only the young could forgive! I’m only going to talk about two characters and the pacing and leave it at that but I could go on! But this is a rant so I ranted about the costumes too.
There are a lot of things about Dune: Part Two that I like one part is the first part! Another is the world. But honestly the characters, acting, and especially the pacing are a big mess. The story is decent but honestly predictable maybe because of all of the predictions that are a part of it.
The main character Paul reaches “god mode” with no real struggle we can relate to except for don’t run from your destiny. Overplayed and nothing special. There are a lot of times when I want to look back at the previous movie to see if I missed something In character growth but I’m sure I didn’t. The movie paces what probably was a longer period of years in the source material in a bad way to make it seem like months and you’re still questioning when and why a particular birth hasn’t occurred in this span of time in the movie. Creating some offscreen mystical character that we could do without honestly.
Another character who has horrible development is the main villain for the movie. Your expected to take him as the most vicious person of Paul’s sworn rivals but he comes out of nowhere even in looking back at the first movie. This villain has about 10 minutes (I didn’t count but sure a little more or less) of proving himself but to the audience it’s just somewhat handed to him that he will be Paul’s biggest obstacle. There is a short scene where this villain interacts with the other two villains from the first to show he is a badass but it fall up short as both are seemingly bigger than him and it makes you question why is he so powerful?
It seem from reading other reviews this movie was very much enjoyed by fans of the book. I was never a fan although I liked sci-fi my science fiction interest is probably the result of Dune inspired literature and film that have surpassed the source material for modern film and societal standards (are we really impressed with dragonfly copters? ) . This movie isn’t even really for people who like sci-fi. It’s just barely okay. There are still a lot of good things about the film such as the diversity of the characters but honestly not enough to change the boring basic male leads. The female characters are just as bad and honestly it’s full of youngish actors making bigger names for themselves none are particularly bad but none are that good either. And you don’t get anything from their costumes that make the males or females stand out from Dune movies of the past. No one is as sexy as Princess Lia From Star Wars or as cool as Han Solo in their attire. Nothing unique about the costume design at all. I hate to give spoilers but that cool thing we thought we would see we don’t see it in this movie everyone has regular clothes…..
