The Kite Runner, debut book of Khaled Hosseini, needs no introduction as it is one of the most remarkable books of modern age. The story deals with the universal theme of friendship, loyalty, loss of innocence, betrayal, guilt, trauma, atonement and redemption. The development of the characters is presented with much humanity. Sometimes I despised the protagonist and his actions but I can not argue on that because they are all nothing but human characteristics.
Hosseini has an excellent grip on the story telling. He never lets his fingers slip on the strings of the events. The setting of the book is basically from days of pre- war Afghanistan to modern USA. His description is near perfect as I felt I was there with them, with the characters, watching them living their life. He sketchs the picture of everything with such colours that even the black and white events of life became colourful.
The book is a constant rollercoaster of emotions. I was surprised in some parts of the book even though sometimes it seemed cliche. But what I personally loved about this book is it's use of symbol and imagery.
It is a story of two childhood friends and a tragic event that shaped their life afterwards; how a mistake, a bad decision or a wrong choice can haunts a person for the rest of his/her life. Before reading this book I did not know much about Afghan culture and even though ours is so different from them in so many ways I could connect myself with the story. The only negative side I would say about this book is the use of foreign words which were difficult to understand sometimes. Nevertheless, I must say, it is a remarkable book and I had the absolute pleasure reading it.
