At first, it started out as a funny, entertaining and exhilarating series with Olivia Pope 'strong character and leadership skills but then, eventually at about season 4, she loses her sense of focus and gets more entitled about her skills and intellect. it looks like a story about love /friendship that survives the traction of power but it ends up being about sex, power and money and maneuvering through all of that and still remaining sane.
Olivia Pope eventually turns out to be selfish, and calculating to stay queen bee and prove that she was right. I hated the fact that she tried so hard to beat her father and mother who btw were just as selfish. I guess they were a necessary part of the story but she fought that battle at the cost of all the people who believed in her. Harrison dies without Olivia realizing that she had lost to her narcissist father and Jake ends up in prison. as in, really?
What was most disappointing for me about the show is how Olivia stalled all the three men who ever genuinely loved her and continually led them on with some kind of hope. Her personal love life was absolutely ridiculous for some one who called herself a fixer. The show features all the scandals she manages but in reality, she is the main scandal that holds all of them together.
I couldn't stand it anymore when she said no to Fitz the third time. On that point, I was done with the show. I mean, why the hell could she not just move on, stop calling or longing and blah, blah blah. The romance between her and Fitz ends up being nonsensical and meaningless. indeed, on that part, it was like a soap opera as one reviewer put it.
I enjoyed 90 percent of the conversations and the president's acceptance of his limits and his sense of conscience that stayed with him to do what was right inspite of the pressure around him. I sympathized with him trying to be in control and yet really, the office had more control over him. Plus he was tired of the political maneuvers but then, Olivia ended up being shifty and non-committal to him. I just felt bad for the guy. If this were to happen to a woman, the show would not get the traction it hoped for but somehow we can put up with a woman who breaks other men's hearts because she wants to do whatever she wants with her life. SO UNFAIR!
The last episode was really clichรฉ and on thinking about it now, the story line was overly thinned to fit a fictional story and yet the events were meant to reflect someone's real life story. All to say, if you can handle the sex, power and money struggle and endure how all the characters develop some from good to bad and for the most, turning from bad to worse, you are good to go. otherwise, you are in for a real heartbreak. Lady Justice does not win in this one 90 percent of the time and all the liberal views feature all through. I really loved the show but left rather disappointed.
I APPRECIATE THE CAST THOUGH. Thanks for your hard work to keep us entertained. you did well.
