This movie is an allegory about someone that has not lived authentically because of fear. If you haven't repressed yourself for any length of time, I don't believe that the movie will have the same impact. It could still serve as a cautionary tale. For the target audience (anyone that has repressed themselves) this movie is a cathartic awakening. It was beautifully executed with much subtleties as well as a big hammer effect for the more dense viewers. Either way it is a great work of art. You can tell by the polarized reviews.
