This is what "re-imagining community living" really looks like!
And just as important this book provides a framework for questioning and challenging our approach to doing, designing, and funding a broad range of community and social services.
A discomforting read at times. This book is not for the faint of heart. The authors pull no punches in their efforts to deconstruct service systems that we have painstakingly built over many generations.
However this book is full of hope. If we want to revitalize our engagement with community we need to, as the authors eloquently articulate, do much more that incrementally improve programs but invent and test out new platforms for civic engagement and empowerment. And Tulloch and Schulman present a starting place to do just that!
The Twelve Stretches listed in Part Three of the book is a "must-read" primer for all who would enter the social service field as well as a refresher for the old hands(both participant and professional) that seek to have a more meaningful, purposeful, and successful experience.
