It's a pretty messed up movie, but towards the end it all kind of comes together and promotes a pretty decent message, although the cheesy one-liner to portray this isn't the best. It's a great film and an essential piece of cinema, though. The acting is pretty life-like and I can imagine how real the film must have felt to audiences at the time.
