The cast is not Mexican and it shows. Not only are the accents not genuine (including the main characterโs Castilian lisp), there is a deep and always present misunderstanding of Mexican cultural nuances, slang, figures of speech, etc. Over all, the movie gives the impression that Mexico was randomly selected as a setting for vaguely fitting with the plot. Also, did anyone involved in the project consider that the trivialization of cartel violenceโinto a musical framework, no lessโmight be insulting to Mexicans who live in constant fear of such violence? Lastly, Mexican women and homosexuals struggle with the consequence of machismo (i.e., macho culture) on a daily basis. The solution to this is to emphasize the experiences of women and to remove the stigma associated with gender nonconformity. What I sawโinsteadโwas an emphasis on the experience of a male who begins his journey of โredemptionโ through deception and the abandonment of his wife and kids.
As a Mexican woman, I suggest that you watch Roma if you want a movie that does justice to the experience of genuine Mexican women. Unlike Emilia Perezโwhich lacks a congruent and transcendental messageโ Roma presents an accurate depiction of Mexico and the realistic consequences of the aforementioned macho culture.
