Just watched "Don't Look Up" and my heart sunk. Not sure it's the right approach. Making American culture look dumb with bombastic and snide swipes full of fluff will no doubt turn the very people climate scientists need to reach away. Would have preferred a much more subtle and commedic approach that would appeal to a wider audience. It certainly did not draw me in. I found it annoyingly trite and predictable to tell you the truth with no emotional or comedic appeal.
How anyone can compare it to the brilliance of Dr Strangelove is, well quite astounding. The best I can say about the movie is to agree with the film maker's statement that "it is the most thinly disguised metaphor in the history of metaphors". That is not clever satire in my book.
While i can see that the message might appeal widely in environmental circles, it was too sledge hammerish for me - and I support what it was trying to say. But I have to admit very few American movies appeal to me for that reason so I freely admit to being a harsh judge with a long history of bias against Hollywood blockbusters...
Sadly, though, I don't think the message will sell to those who need to hear it most, which is a missed opportunity.
