I am so tired of sequels and series. So when I saw the trailer for this movie, I was immediately hooked. Don't let the reviews persuade you, this movie is awesome. Great world building, fun characters (sky pirates!), and stunning visuals. Probably one of the best fantasy movies of the year. The plot may be a bit cliche/familiar, but the movie doesn't take itself seriously. I haven't read the book it was based on, but I'm almost happy I didn't. I liked it for what it was. The female characters are especially a breath of fresh air.
