The Broadway versions were great, the 1961 film deserved all 10 of its Academy Awards, and my money is on Stephen Speilburg's upcoming version dazzling a whole new generation for this ultimate piece of American music. Still, watching the Maestro himself, Leonard Bernstein, conduct his masterpiece for the first time is literally spellbinding. Add to this a cast of some of the the greatest voices in the world, including Jose Carreras, Dame Kiri te Kanawa, Tatiyana Troyanos, Kurt Ollmann, and Marylin Horne, and you have a recording solidly, eternally enshrined in the realm of genius. West Side Story may be the greatest piece of music in the American canon.
