I had no idea. How can a piece of history like this have been lost for so long? I saw this on POV on PBS and had to immediately look for more information. That this can go on anywhere has always been frightening but it's doubly so when you realize it happened in New York City. As Madame de Stael said, "The more I see of men, the more I like dogs". That's how I felt during and for a long time after watching this.
