Pretty bad, considering the money and effort Amazon put in. There was a recipe for success that was shown in 6 movies made previous to this. Amazon may not have purchased the rights to that material, but that should not have stopped them from taking notes. Or perhaps they did…. It seems that they took every boring piece of dialogue, every misplaced soliloquy, and every bit of tedious filler and wrapped them into a ball of 5 episodes (thus far). If the next 3 episodes are packed with brutal combat, heroic duals and incredible marksmanship, perhaps the first 5 hours can be forgiven. Somehow I doubt this will happen. Instead, I believe that this ill-fated journey will lumber on as a cosplay soap opera. Edging ever closer to the final episode, where the last 20 minutes will provide some action and hope of redemption in the next season. I have 5 spent hours wishing this would be something more than it is. Amazon wasted $1B. This should be a lesson that unlimited resources cannot overcome a lack of vision and creativity.
Remember that Tolkien wrote the start of “The Hobbit” as a way to show his students that literature should be interesting. Imagination should flow freely from words and hook the reader. This series is the antithesis of Tolkien’s work. I am only thankful that he died long before seeing this tired and passionless rendering.
