I read. A lot. I am, however, kind of picky in what I read. I love history-based fiction mostly, but I also like the quirky and humorous. The best series I've read in a LONG time is The Death's Collector series by Bill McCurry. I've laughed allowed, literally jumped, and winced while reading it! Although based on sword and sorcery genre, it is one of the most human and relevant reading I can remember. Give it a run. The worst that'll happen is you'll lose some sleep because you'll not want to put it down.
