*spoiler alert*
the loss of a mother is never an easy one. and in this film Mahito wasn't sure if he wanted to stay in his current reality or if he wanted to depart from it. this movie is about a journey a young boy takes to understand himself, his place and if there is any joy after such heartbreak.
the metaphors in this movie go deep. we'd like to fly like a pelican but something is weighing him down. and even with reincarnation it's not always peaceful if the creator is not well balanced.
one of the most stunning moments in the film is when Mahito thought he was meeting his mum again but in the version he last saw her in. he never thought he'd meet the version of her that was his age but it was evident as she came back in the form of fire.
this movie is poetry to life, choosing to live and knowing that we can create and we can find balance and we can see ourselves in a time of grief, curiously and sometimes even with a bit of laughter.
