I enjoy space sci-fi movies, seeing a glimps of the future, the beauty of space, just how hostile space is and what struggles we might have to go through. Each new movie or series builds on old ideas, adding a few more ideas and refinements based on current developments in technology.
This movie looked amazing, the graphics and design work put in to make locations in space and on earth. Loved how 3D printed objects seemed everywhere, even the ship itself, with 3d printing bots performing external repairs to their spaceship even.
The story was touching, and kept you entertained. The twist at the end was amazing, and I had hoped there was just a little more story to tell. That they had spent less time with the journey to the other artic station, and maybe included what happened to the spacemen that attempted to land, or perhaps having Clooney find out that he would soon be a grandfather.
This movie tended to do things a little differently than other human race survival movies. Food and fuel were never concerns. Repopulation and survival of the species didn't take preference over the crews own desires to be with their families on what seems like a now uninhabitable earth. I'd also like to know how they're travelling so far in space without spending some portion of the trip in cryogenic sleep - the movie makes it appear as if the journey from jupiter to earth lasts only a few weeks.
It also seems odd that the artic crew Clooney was with had notice that there was a major disaster on the horizon with time to evacuate, but NASA didn't make a plan to communicate with their crew in the spaceship about earth's potential demise. The story explains that paths in space had been previously explored and beacons and satellites placed on their path, but none of those had recorded messages from mission control?
Overall it seemed like a good movie. I think it's not something most people would have patience to watch all the way without getting bored or distracted at some point, but I think science fiction and space lovers will enjoy the movie.
