Saw this movie in the cinema tonight.
I think this movie does a lot to capture the Japanese diaspora and the dark cloud that death and trauma can put on a family.
But for me I would have been more sold on the story if the main woman character was someone we could root for. In my opinion, she came across as very selfish and unlikeable. Her flirting with a married Japanese man with no obvious background other than their Japanese background was uncomfortable, and the discussion on that was not very organic.
Having said that, this is the first Canadian film I've ever watched dealing with that topic and bringing it into modern day, and the movie does bring up important ideas of racism.
Basically I think this movie covers a lot, but honestly could be delivered better.
