This book is a masterpiece! As soon as i got it by mail, i couldn't put the book down. Brought back so many memories of my Boy Scout days in the 90's. But what really struck me were the feelings that Aiden felt. I was that chubby gay kid in scouts who wished he was like the jocks. I especially related 100% to the "God hates me" and "Being different" topics that are expressed in some pivotal moments in the book. I really got emotional (and you better believe I cried) as things got intense towards the end.
Such a great read and the illustrations are impeccable. Especially the black and white watercolorings with the expression of the orange flames that appear in the fantasy sequences. Mike Curato totally inhabits the experience of Boy Scouts and combines the fictional element so well at the proper places. I enjoyed his use of metaphors with the Boy Scout activities to the emotions Aiden was feeling.
Read this if your LGBTQ+ or not. Its message is something everyone, including youth and adults, need to be reminded of. That being different isn't a sin. Your worth is important. There is brightness and hope at the end of the trail. You'll want to reread it again (for the artwork) and again (for the metaphors) and again (just cause its awesome).
