I'm glad I saw this movie and recommend it because it's very entertaining, while at the same time showing the challenges and hardship of Elton John's life with parents who were ill equipped to deal with his talent and need for affection. Like all parents, they had their own problems, but it seemed almost as if little Elton was a burden to them from the start. Luckily, Elton's musical gifts opened up a new world but, like many stars whose success comes fairly easily, he fell into the trap of a glamorous life and needed drugs and alcohol to deal with his then-unaccepted homosexuality, and the exploitation and manipulation that ensued. There were flaws in the movie, also. Too much melodrama, abrupt transitions from the drug use scenes to performing almost immediately afterwards, to more substance abuse. But despite these flaws, the movie left me in awe of Elton John's contributions to our world, both musically and as a humanitarian. The cast is great, particularly the actors who played Elton as a young boy and the adult Elton, and his loyal friend, Bernie. The musical numbers and all the glitz that can be shown in a movie are used to great effect.
