This "comedy" pretends to represent the uncomfortable terrain between white and black folks. But in reality, it portrays an absolutely racist, two dimensional story. This is 2023. People are much more accepting of each, and of course it'd be interesting to know how interracial families navigate the dynamics between each other. because of all the lil differences in the way different people live))) But the way it's demonstrated in this "comedy" is by having white side be 13 year old - like dummies, who just babble and unknowingly say or do racist stuff while trying to be cordial and friendly. And the black side forever judges the white people for their place in society. They are cold, racist, and anti-semitic and never stop grilling into the other family's dummy racist faces. And Jonah Hill's character and his wife's character don't have any chemistry on screen, it feels flat. As the entire movie does. Especially pronouncing the ending message of the movie that black and white people will never get along in america. Like what!? how much more of separation inducing, covertly racist, messed up point of view can this story be? We're all people. And the social landscape is much more nuanced, advanced and complicated. And the unspoken steer in the direction is that we're all on the same side. stop trying to provoke these separative ideas and point the way towards something more real and beautiful. And it could be done well through ugliness, not the same ugliness that they tried to show in this movie.
Oh and it's not funny. And yes, I was really looking forward to this one, becuase of so many talented people involved, especially Eddie.
