(No spoilers in the top half)
It was ok.
Lost interest in the third part of the movie unfortunately, as it got a little too crazy/suspension of disbelief went too far, to a noticeable degree. The ending/message part was very nice, you'll know when you see it. Didn't make me cry, though, which is disappointing for a Pixar movie lol. Unfortunately, I found myself more interested in the mother's story by the end instead of the main characters.
Spoiler part:
I don't believe everyone in school would keep quiet/be okay with the panda transformation.
I don't believe the bully boy would be so easily accepted into the girls' friend group on such a whim (that could have been fleshed out so much more for a much better/interesting thing). I thought they were going to go somewhere interesting with the Birthday Party plot, where maybe this kid just thought Mei's friend group was secretly cool and he desperately wanted to be a part of that, perhaps for their shared interest in the boy band... nope. Fell flat and was rushed at the last minute.
I really, really don't believe that they managed to completely destroy a multibillion dollar concert stadium in the heart of a giant city and get off as scott-free as they did. People could have DIED. Heck, they probably did. No background characters cared about what was happening in the slightest and it just felt... off. It felt weird.
I wish this story was a bit more like the Pixar movie Luca, if you've seen it. Smaller story that focuses more on the relationship between the friends and of course, the mother/Mei's family. I wish they didn't incorporate the red panda thing the way they did, because the climax was the weakest point, I believe. It was rushed, too unbelievable in a number of ways, and too... "big". A good climax doesn't NEED to have huge explosions/a boss fight/etc. Really wish it were anything else.
I did like the "message" scene, where Mei meets her mother in the bamboo forest. That whole scene was great. A real shame the buildup to it in the stadium was dumb. I don't like to use the word dumb because it's such a lame, opinion-y term, but...
Idk. I'll have to re-watch it or something. It's a bad sign to me when instead of celebrating how a story/movie went, I'm just sitting here fantasizing much better plotlines that would have felt much more heartfelt than how it went.
