As I wade through the quicksand of this unbelievably frustrating plot I can only think of how bad the writers are. While the gentle portrayal of the characters is sometimes charming, and the filming evocative at times, the storyline doesn’t make sense and the characters seem held back by the writers’ inability to understand cause and effect and how to engage an audience.

Brilliantly written series. I love watching this show as there is no slick, self conscious writing that dominates other Netflix shows. The characters are believable. The plots are complex but easily understood with great dialogue. Love it.

Dreadful film. I nearly walked out but thought I’d give it a chance. A potentially interesting plot but spoiled by a simplistic screenplay. The daughter was unconvincing in her role as she didn’t look anything like either parent. Julianne Moore was ok but her role was spoilt by poor writing as well. The screaming scene where she is in her husband’s arms was appalling for its lack of depth ‘ I don’t want to die!’ Michelle Williams’ character looks too sad and angry most of the time. The storyline didn’t support that and there was no depth to her character portrayal. It felt like the director told the characters to scream certain lines to add depth to dialogue but it only jarred me as there was no convincing reason for the emotion. The film was visually beautiful to watch but that was about it!
