I have been a constant visitor to Hill End for over 50 years and a contributor of sorts to its history, with a particular interest in the Holtermann Collection. For anyone with an interest in Australia’s pioneering history, and related photography, Christoph Hein’s latest book (Australia 1872) is a must have edition to your library. From front to back, this publication is beautifully presented, and well written. Aside from the stunning images capturing life on the goldfields, Christoph also manages to expose the life of Bernhard Holtermann, arguably one of Australia’s most unsung heroes who was largely responsible for exposing Australia to the world as an industrious and appealing country.
Overall, I highly recommend this book for your bookshelf, but is probably better suited on your coffee table for regular viewing for your family and friends. 5 stars.
