I thoroughly enjoyed both Clerks and Clerks 2, revisiting these classic films numerous times. Clerks 3 begins with promise, as both Randall and Dante reminisce about the past, a theme that quickly becomes tiresome.
Kevin Smith relies heavily on the nostalgia of the first two films, enticing the audience with a plethora of cameos and reenactments of familiar scenes.
The film could have been a masterpiece if Smith had sought or heeded sound advice to refine his writing. The clever dialogue, wit, and humor that made the first two movies classics are noticeably absent.
What's the difference? Smith finally got to use his original ending for Clerks, but unfortunately, this time there was no one to advise him to revise it.
You may disagree, but in my opinion, this isn't a Clerks story at all. It's more a tale about a man (let's call him Kev) who is unable to move past cherished moments from a time long gone.
