[NOTE: The number of one-star reviews is a bit high. Turns out it's because fans of the movie are posting them to argue with the inevitable bigots, thereby artificially inflating the numbers. Please don't copy this behavior. This is our chance to send a message that good media goes over well and is worth producing.
If you REALLY want praxis, REPORT abusive reviews. It's way more effective politically, and it's much healthier. That, and also go watch Strange World, Barbie, etc to keep showing appreciation and support for the production teams that are taking these gambles for us to bring us media that matters.]
Review: Excited since I was a fan of the webcomic. Did not disappoint.
The characterization of the beloved characters is performed excellently, and Goldenloin being portrayed by Eugene Lee Yang was a stroke of genius.
The near-future/medieval setting evolved into scifi/medieval and the art style is sharp and crisp.
Very satisfying seeing Nimona's powers in full 3d animation, and they didn't skimp on it.
I'll be watching this one multiple times ^^
And yes it's gay! Two of the characters are in a beautiful, loving gay relationship, and one of the characters exhibits strong genderqueer vibes. They are done justice! It makes my little heart sing.
Children SHOULD watch this movie, as it shows the reality of how differences can alienate us, but also that just because someone seems strange or is from a different world than us, doesn't mean we should reject them. And if we ourselves are alienated, it's not over. There will always be people who can appreciate us and love us for who we are.
These are messages disney and pixar and all makers of children's media have ALWAYS been telling us, since the little mermaid, since the ugly duckling, and beyond the bounds of recorded history.
It's good to see theory be put into practice.
This IS an ugly ducking movie, and I am proud that the story will survive forever, to always be a beacon of hope for those in need, and a lesson for those who are still learning empathy. And we are ALL both those people, always.
