A thought provoking take on the Joker origin tale. It explores the consequences of untreated medical illness with a brief nod to domestic violence and exactly how cruel society can be to those above and below the poverty line. For all that Phoenix gives an engaging performance, and the beautifully gritty setting of 1970s Gotham City, the movie seems to just travel along with no real excitement despite a few moments of intense violence.
Still definitely worth a watch.
