I think most people have forgotten what makes a good film. Don't get me wrong, a lot of Dune looks great. A lot of Dune is also too dark to even see. The sound isn't bad either, although there seems to be a bit of reliance on seat shaking bass to create tension and more than once important lines of dialogue were hard to decipher. The acting is definitely fabulous for the most part. The complicated plot of the books is delivered well by focusing on one family and a handful of characters, making the world and its political intricacies easy to digest. Unfortunately the director seems to have forgotten all about character development. I didn't care about any of the characters whatsoever. Any deaths, that may or may not occur, left me feeling ambivalent or even just down right indifferent. However, I do feel like I was the only one to leave the cinema disappointed and when I apologised to my partner for bringing her along she asked why as she thought it was great. Maybe it's just me or maybe everyone is just happy being force fed sandy mediocrity.
