Conclusion:
They took the name and appearance of the legendary ATLA show to wrap their own better-than-average story.
Just a simple example: Suki.
In cartoon series, Suki focused on her task: protecting the village and training Kyoshi warrior. Only when Sokka approached their training dojo and trying to show off but fail, he accepted his self-seeking humiliation to ask for help in his own training, then Suki slowly getting attracted to that aspect during their practices. (That's what I deciphered from original series; not sure it was the real intention for it to be like that)
Now in the adaption series, YES, she really did her job, by protecting the village when three strangers (Aang Katara Sokka obviously) approached the statue.
HOWEVER, later on, after she saw Sokka half-naked body, she seemed like getting attracted to him. Secretly watching Sokka from afar (Is she a college kids falling in love for the first time?) Interrupting Sokka training and humiliating him for a bonus. So now an admirable and formidable warrior became just a girl who act like a warrior.
It just doesn't feel right, like her tier dropping down, and can't win over my respect anymore.
And I think the casts did well on their performances, just the story writing is bad.
It's a pity that such a good character gets bad writing.
It's still a watchable show to enjoy, just not from the eyes an ATLA fans.
