I sat and watched this with my 11 year old granddaughters, having told them what a wonderful story they were to see. First. I have read many of these reviews and respect the fact that many people enjoyed this film. Secondly, I should say I have already seen at least two other film versions of the story. Much of the period was believably presented in the clothing and furnishings in various scenes. One or two actors did a reasonable job with , often, limited dialogue. The dance scenes come over well. However, the point of the story is to see the gradual development of each of the sisters and the relationships between them. This film version decided to do this by chopping from one period to another. OK if you are dealing with, say, one character, but utterly confusing with several. The film is an editors nightmare as it hops about between time periods, characters and incidents - often never developed or completed. Result was two young granddaughters who were utterly confused and one sad grandfather! I am not surprised the movie did not win Oscars- but amazed it got nominations. However, many people seem to have liked it, so give it a go and make up your own mind
