The pace of the film reflects the pace of life in the rural Irish setting of the film. This is not a criticism, but a positive relief from the fast edit and intrusive camera techniques that are so often used. And that fits in perfectly with writer McGachern’s intent to chronicle the ‘day to day’ of everyday life.
But don’t be deceived. This is an extraordinary film in so many ways. The performances are excellent, and allow us to see beyond the stereotypes of rural Irish life and engage with the minutiae of their lives.
There are stand out moments too - the funeral is one of the emotional highlights handled beautifully by the lead actor. Slow burn it may be, but it’s a film of great warmth and humanity with a message which reaches way beyond the communities of Ireland.
