This isn't a science fiction movie, it's a tedious character study of an emotionless man with daddy issues who happens to be in space for no justifiable reason. The critics loved it because they always love tedious character studies, regardless of whether the plot makes sense or not. Ultimately, it has nothing to say of any value whatsoever.
