Yikes, what a snore fest…
It’s so obvious in what it’s trying to do and yet fails on pretty much every level of it.
“It’s building an uncomfortable and tense athmosphere” the house is too clean and pleasant to be uncomfortable, the sound mixing is too messed up to hear anything uncomfortable that might be happening, the camera angles are too arts-y to be uncomfortable.
“It’s about the build-up of fear and paranoia as you live in isolation” there’s not enough change in the protagonist’s mannerisms and character to call anything a ‘build-up’. She starts slightly paranoid and she ends slightly paranoid and then a jumpscare happens, NOTHING CHANGES.
“It’s a slow-burn” it’s trying to be the antithesis of fast-paced horror that’s the norm these days and that’s totally fine, but in doing so it did the complete opposite and made something that’s just boring and completely misses the mark as to the ‘point’ it’s trying to make. You don’t have to make a movie where pretty much nothing happens in order to prove you can make a slow-burn spooky movie. And then also be surprised when most people can’t stand this type of movie, it’s an acquired taste!
It could’ve been a really good slow commentary on what fear and isolation can do to a person, where it’s obvious the protagonist is going from just a bit anxious to unhinged making stuff up tragic. But it didn’t, it’s just… flat. Watch some Mike Flannigan instead.
