This isn’t your typical Diana movie. It’s far more sensitive, artistic and intelligent. It shows Diana’s nightmare of isolation, shock and depression as part of the royal family, encapsulated in one 3-day holiday at their country estate after her husband’s love affair has been uncovered. She’s trapped. Going crazy from being forced to attend a mockery of a family gathering. Asked to pretend all is well when she is angry and sad and shocked by the affair and how very wrong things are. It’s like being inside her head and watching her at the same time at the moment she realized she was done. Kristen Stewart did an amazing job bringing vulnerability and emotion to a very difficult role. It’s hard to play an icon in a new way (especially while wearing a truly awful wig). There’s great supporting characters and the movie restrains itself from making the royal family into villains. The ending leaves the audience with a surprisingly upbeat note. Art house movie for sure, but worth watching.
