I lost interest after Ragnar was killed off. The acting was mediocre, and there wasn't anything to hold onto to keep my interest so I stopped watching during the first half of season five.

I may have done some comparing when watching but I also watched it as an individual movie, as if the other didn't exist. I liked it. I haven't read any of the books.
