An absolutely amazing performance by these two the relativeness to people in the film industry is impeccable. It’s a shame this movie has become something fun to critique but in all my understanding as a mentally ill, mixed race, black female actress (who is coincidentally also named Marie) this film hit me in ways I never would have expected even from such brilliant actors, cinematographers and director.
My two favourite scenes (spoilers) have to be the scene of Marie holding a knife and pretending as though she had lost her mind, which knowing the extreme possibility of that being true, genuinely put me on edge. The second one has to be when Marie is sitting in the bath and tears are running down her face due to the spitefully inconsiderate words about better past lovers that Malcom is spewing at her.
I’m currently studying A level film in London and I hope that one day I can create heartfelt masterpieces much like this one.
