I read the book as a young teen. Granted, the movie deviates some from the written word, but doesn't nearly every movie adaptation? I would describe this movie as smooth, flowing, and gentle. Its not an indulgent, exciting full course meal, but rather a warm, home-cooked apple pie with just the right sized scoop of real whipped cream. Ford is nearly 80 years old, so his character is played as expected. No bull whip...no high speed chases. The animated dogs are JUST expressive enough to enjoy without being silly. Overall, this movie is a solid 6.5.
No parent will find this disappointing as a feel-good family flick, and anyone who appreciates wilderness will enjoy. If I could have had a say in the production, I would have suggested a bit more breathtaking panoramic scenery.
