What a dreadfully bad movie. There I said (wrote) it! I kept waiting for this movie to show some sense of storytelling, but it failed to do so. War is hell, I get it—-I’ve been there. Did I, or anyone else for that matter, need an almost 3 hour movie to tell us that? I’ll save you all time—-watch a documentary or docu-series on WW1 instead, you’ll learn more and probably care for the cast more than this movie will inspire.
Where a war movie should sit is comfortably between explaining history, and building a connection between the cast and the audience. There was none of that done here. At best, there was a feeble attempt to get the audience to care about a character; instead of caring, however, we were left to feel that even little farm boys can be evil. Ultimately, there was no reason to care about any of the characters --- not even the main character.
I will leave you with some recommendations, however, watch 1917 or Gallipoli; they both have better plots, better writing, and better audience character connections.
